One nurse's experience with an astounding new tool.

As a nurse, I am always on the lookout for innovative technologies that can transform the profession of nursing, so I was beyond excited when I stumbled upon Chat GPT, an easy to use, cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) language model program that utilizes natural language processing to generate responses to written or spoken words. The potential for Chat GPT to revolutionize the way healthcare professionals communicate with patients and each other is truly groundbreaking.

While playing around with Chat GPT, I did notice a few drawbacks. The limitations listed on Openai.com state, “May occasionally generate incorrect information. May occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content. Limited knowledge of world and events after 2021.” After spending some time exploring Chat GPT I did experience errors and a lack of knowledge about current events.

On the other hand, Chat GPT completely obliterated any writer’s block and was able to format briefs, letters, and legal documents correctly. The language model cracked my creativity wide open. Seeing Chat GPT’s potential firsthand, and keeping in mind that we must vet responses, not only am I incredibly optimistic about AI in healthcare, but I’m also optimistic about AI in society.

We are seeing an exponential increase in AI programs and applications arising from the Chat GPT success. At this writing, there are multiple iterations of natural language processing generators tailored to specific uses being advertised. Some are free and some require a subscription, but the sheer number coming out means that the public is catching the AI wave. Keep your eyes peeled for creations that can apply to your specific area. You could also ask Chat GPT to write the code for your own application!

A pedestrian, yet real-life example of a Chat GPT response follows:

Chat GPT:

Introduction:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant strides in recent years, and one of the areas in which it has been applied is in the field of chatbots and natural language processing. Chat GPT (short for "Generative Pre-training Transformer") is a type of AI technology that uses machine learning to generate human-like responses to written or spoken input. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way that healthcare professionals, including nurses, communicate with patients and each other.

What is Chat GPT?

Chat GPT is a type of natural language processing (NLP) technology that uses machine learning algorithms to generate responses to written or spoken input. It works by analyzing the input and using its knowledge of language patterns and structure to generate a response that is similar to how a human would respond.

One of the key benefits of Chat GPT is its ability to understand and respond to a wide range of inputs, including questions, statements, and requests. It can also recognize and respond to different accents, dialects, and colloquialisms, making it a useful tool for communicating with patients from diverse backgrounds.

How is Chat GPT used in healthcare?

There are many potential applications for Chat GPT in the healthcare industry, including:

Patient communication: Chat GPT can be used to communicate with patients through chatbots or virtual assistants, providing information and answering questions in real-time. This can help reduce the workload of healthcare professionals and improve the patient experience by providing access to information and support at all times.

Clinical decision support: Chat GPT can be integrated into electronic health records (EHRs) to provide clinical decision support to healthcare professionals. It can analyze a patient's medical history and provide recommendations for treatment or management based on best practices and evidence-based guidelines.

Education and training: Chat GPT can be used to create personalized learning experiences for healthcare professionals. It can provide information and answer questions in real-time, helping nurses to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field.

What are the benefits of Chat GPT for nurses?

There are several benefits of Chat GPT for nurses, including:

Improved patient care: Chat GPT can help nurses to provide better care to their patients by providing access to information and support at all times. It can also help to reduce the workload of nurses by automating routine tasks and answering common questions.

Enhanced communication: Chat GPT can improve communication between nurses and patients, particularly for those who may have difficulty communicating due to language barriers or other issues. It can also facilitate communication between nurses and other healthcare professionals, helping to improve the overall coordination of care.

Increased efficiency: By automating routine tasks and answering common questions, Chat GPT can help nurses to work more efficiently and free up time to focus on more complex and high-priority tasks.

Chat GPT is a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize the way that healthcare professionals, including nurses, communicate with patients and each other. Its ability to understand and respond to a wide range of inputs and recognize different accents and dialects makes it an effective tool for improving patient care and communication in the healthcare industry. As the technology continues to evolve, it is likely to have an increasingly significant impact on the way that healthcare professionals work and the quality of care that they are able to provide to patients.
